OPEN
RISK TAKER
According to Collins English Dictionary,
an open risk taker means an individual or business that tends to behave in a
way that can potentially cause physical harm or financial loss, but might also
present an opportunity for a rewarding outcome. Risk bearing and
entrepreneurship are inseparable from each other because any decision made by
an entrepreneur carries some degree of risk taking, whether big or small.
Example, when expanding business to a second store or another country carries
the risk of failure and loss profits. Willingness to take risks can give an
entrepreneur a competitive edge when business owners have enough information
and take risks by considering all possible alternatives to success.
An entrepreneur should have the courage
to take risks because if entrepreneur do not have this attitude, the risk
cannot be dealt with in the business operated. The higher the risk, the greater
the return they will get. For instance, the the successful entrepreneur that
willing to do something that will cause financial loss in order to achieve his
mission is Tan
Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah Bin Syed Nor Al-Bukhary. He was born in 1951 in Alor
Setar, Kedah into a middle class family. He cannot continue his education due
to poverty. So, he completed his secondary education without furthering it into
university level and start to help his father in business by managing the
account.
He is a businessman and the richest
Malay entrepreneur in Malaysia. He is a man who doesn’t know the meaning of
failure and always learn from mistake. He involved in diversified business
areas which include transportation and logistics, plantations, property
development defense and armory as well as engineering and power generation.
These show that he is a risk takers entrepreneur because he always found the
ways to explore and try something new in business that have risks. In 1970, his
father’s business declined due animal disease and he dare to take his father’s
business. In addition, he is willing to take risks to carry its business with
substantial financial capital when his company establish a contract with the
government to supply rice, tea, powdered chocolate, powdered milk and ghee.
Besides, he moved his business to the
transportation development business. He was willing to take risk to get involve
in a new field work. He received a permit for trucks of class A by taking risk
to apply loan from MARA to buy two lorries Mercedes for RM110 000 to start his
rice business in 1972. He establish transport company named as Sentosa
Transport Company after buying two lorries and the company still existing until
now and have 40 trucks.
He is also involved in shiping business.
He established Bukhari Shipping and acts as broker vessel under the CABOTAGE
policy. However, business is a loss that forced him to sell his ship named
Goose Mas at a price of USD600,000, namely loss of USD400,000. That ship was a German-made ship which was 28 years old
at the price of $1 milion. He bought it to transport rice from Thailand to
Sabah and Sarawak. He does not give up easily, he try to join venture in
Islamic banking by taking over Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad eventhough the
involvement in financial and banking are difficult.
As we can see that Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar
Al-Bukhary has courageous efforts in taking the risk of going into business
that has paid off so much that he can diversify his business selling without a
need to rely on a business revenues only.
OBSERVANT
DATUK
WIRA DOKTOR AMEER ALI MYDIN
In the Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries,
observant outline as good as noticing things around a person. Entrepreneur must
pay attention to precisely everything that happens around them, within or
outside the organization by collecting useful information about business
surroundings and make a note. In business perspective, an observant is the one
of the important key to success because the entrepreneur will predict what will
happen or be needed in the future by identifying the condition or environment
of business such as changes in customer taste and changes in technology, their
competitors and the risk that they will face before make any decision.
Therefore, to overcome these problems, successful entrepreneur will observe and
make a strategic planning whether in a short or a long time period.
For example, a clever entrepreneur in
Malaysia and apply for opportunities in the organization and get a good profit
is Datuk Wira Doctor Ameer Ali Mydin. He is a director of Mydin Mohamed
Holdings Berhad and is among the group’s retail and wholesale business in
Malaysia with total annual sales reached RM1.6 million.
Mydin Mohamed is the son of Mr Ghulam
Hussein has opened a small woodworking shop in Kota Bharu, Kelantan in 1957.
The store was named Mydin Mohamed Holdings by selling toys and general merchandise using
their own cash. He was able to expand its business widely because he was a
brilliant figure in taking the opportunities that exist within a business. He
did not give up easily and always learn to be a more open-minded to set up more
Mydins’ branches in Malaysia in order to meet user requirements.
He will look at the business environment
and the constraints faced by the economy before making any action. He saw
business potential from various angles, especially marketing angle to further
its business. For example, the depreciation of the currency and the imposition
of tax on goods and services, better known as the GST by the government has led
him to take the initiative to reduce the sales price to attract buyers because
he understands that some customers cannot afford the product at high prices
through observation. Therefore, he was offering goods at a low price and
affordable compared to other supermarkets to compete with existing competitors
in the market such as Tesco, Econsave and others.
In addition, he also pays attention to
the quality of goods sold to meet with customer satisfaction and loyalty mainly
shoppers who want to be thrifty when spending. He always made sure the products

especially for wet perishable materials. He was sensitive to the current
economic climate. Mydin has diversified its sales of products to satisfy the needs
and tastes of customers. Besides selling daily necessities, he added new
product lines such as electrical equipment, clothes and others.

entrepreneur is an observer that is sensitive to the environment and strive to
advance the business to a higher level. He is always looking for ideas to
ensure that his business will continue to remain in the market that can compete
with products from other companies.
VISIONARY(BERWAWASAN)
Any success in life, you must begin with a vision. The
defination of visionary is someone or something that thinks about future or
advancements in a creative and imaginative way. He or she has a powerful plan
for change in the future. A visionary entrepreneur is one who is able to see
what others are not able.It means this kind of entrepreneurs have the right
kind of picture in their mind that lets them know what will be the outcome of
their business venture. A visionary entrepreneur work with a vision of how
their business is going to do in every detail connected with it and what
exactly the result they intend to produce. Two things that stop most
visionaries from creating a business that works is lack of business skills and
having ascarcity mindset, entrepreneurs have three main things that helps them

beginning of the creation of the light bulb, he failed to get the loan money
because people assume that creation is quite impossible to succeed. After
getting a loan, Thomas tried in developing a commercially viable light bulb. He
failed over a thousand times in trying to find the right filament for his light
bulb before getting it right. However, this situation is not deterred and does
not consider himself a failure. Even Thomas’s rate of success was significantly
low but he continued to test several types of material for metal filaments to
improve upon his original until he successfully invented the light bulb in
1880. Thomas Edison’s company, Edison Light Company began marketing its new
product company.
In

in business but used it for encouragement and motivation. The failure was a

PROACTIVE
STEVEN
PAUL JOBS ( STEVE JOB)
One of
the most proactive successful entrepreneur is Steven Paul Jobs, or know as
Steven Job. He was best known as the chairman, co-founder Apple, and chief
executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc. CEO and largest shareholder of Pixar
Animation Studios. Steven is a member of board directors of The Walt Disney
Company following its acquisition of Pixar and founder, chairman, and NeXT Inc.
CEO. Jobs is also known as a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the
1970s, along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
People described him as the creative and proactive entrepreneur whose
passion for ferocious and perfection drive revolutionized six industries,
personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and
digital publishing.
He is
very proactive in making his company run well. In 1976, when Jobs still be Co-
founded Apple, he sold Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer (A Coeur Ouvert, 4
Jan 2015).The duo gained fame and wealth a year later for the Apple II, which
is the first successful mass-produced personal computers. According to video The Online Cooperate
Culture (2015), after a tour of Xerox PARC in 1979, Jobs realised that
Xerox Alto have high commercial potential, which was mouse-driven and had a
graphical user interface (GUI). This caused the Apple Lisa failed in
development in 1983 followed by the brings to successful Macintosh in 1984,
according to Forbes 400 (2015).
Become
the first company that are mass-produced computer with a GUI, the Macintosh
instigated the rise of the desktop publishing industry in surprise in 1985 with
the addition of the Apple Laser Writer, the laser printer that be first created
to feature vector graphics. By following a long power struggle, Jobs was
forced out of Apple in 1985. After he leaving Apple, Jobs took a few of its
members with him to found NeXT, a computer platform development company
focusing in the local art of computers for higher-education and business
markets. Moreover, Jobs helped to initiate the visual effects industry
developed when Steve funded the spinout of the computer graphics division of
George Lucas’s company Lucas film in 1986. The new company, Pixar, would
eventually produce the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story an event
be made successfully in part because of Jobs’ financial support.
According
to Stanford News (2009), Steve became the Apple CEO once again. He
decided to go back to the company, which was on the verge of bankruptcy to back
to profitability. Apple never get profit without job’s ability. It is because
he is so proactive find the solution for how to make his company making profit.
Otherwise, he is person who is very open minded and very positive even though
he dismissed from his own company. Steve Jobs, (in his speech at Stanford
University 2005) said that he dismissed from company was the best thing that
could have ever happened to him.
According
to Entrepreneur (2014), Steve Jobs has affected lots of computer
design. It is because of his idiosyncratic leadership style, hyperbolic
presentations, and straightly hands-on management be shown have inspired the
envy of executives and the fear of more than lots of employees and competitors.
Even though he steps down from the helm at the Apple company he founded, he
sets an example for those who would aspire to his level of leadership. He is
very proactive. Everything that he do, it always give his best for his company.
He also like to communicate with his costume, with that ways, he know what his
costume need better than they know. For example, above everything else, Steve
Jobs really understands his customer deeply. Although he as a CEO, Jobs
has bucked conventional wisdom in the industry and avoided the customers’
demands and expectations of the industries. Sometimes, the most critics’
consumers will bring the best end-user experience and Steve understood it at
the time to market.
Moreover,
Steve has announced that 99 percent music can be downloaded through Apple phone
without any payment. It made many consumers unbelievable with it. It was
because people were used to downloading music online for free. At that
moment, the music industry unwilling to accept it and conscious about the
rock-bottom price per song. Jobs’ apparent stubbornness appeared as an out crop
for his deep view about user experience. He realised that Apple’s users
actually did know their own demands. Hence, Steve Jobs just fulfilled the
customer’s demand .
As a conclusion, Steve Jobs run
Apple with empathetic, effective and creative . He was a leader of people.
